VIDEO: Massive drilling rig collapses in Alaska

At over 160-feet tall when deployed, the Doyon 26 is among the largest mobile rigs in the world.

Dramatic footage has captured the moment a massive drilling rig collapsed in north of Alaska.

The Doyon Rig 26, built, owned and operated by US company Doyon Drilling, was operating as part of a project for supermajor ConocoPhillips.

The incident took place on Friday 23 February at 4:45pm local time (1:45am on 24 February GMT) while travelling on an ice and gravel road near Nuiqsut on the North Slope of Alaska.

According to comments from ConocoPhillips, two people were on the rig at the time of the collapse.

While no fatalities or serious injuries were reported, both people, along with six initial responders, were taken to local clinics and later discharged, with all other personnel accounted for.

A fire also broke out but was contained and extinguished.

Writing on social media, Alaska governor Mike Dunleavy said there had been “minimal damage to the environment and no impact to oil infrastructure or facilities.

“They are responding with a team, working on plans to recover the rig, and we will know more as they assess,” he added.

In addition, local authorities said there was no risk to local winter fuel shortages.

Saturday saw ConocoPhillips begin an environmental impact assessment on the incident.

At around 165 feet and weighing over 4,000 tonnes, Doyon 26 drilling rig is also referred to as “The Beast”. It has been called the biggest mobile drilling rig currently operating in North America.

Alaska and the US Arctic are coming back into focus as US president Donald Trump reversed a ban on new offshore oil and gas drilling brought in by his predecessor Joe Biden.

This affected 625 million acres of federal waters including the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the Northern Bering Sea.

However, Trump has been looking to open the Alaskan Arctic back up, signing a resolution into law in December that would reverse some of the Biden-era restrictions, with a lease sale planned.
